Distinguished and Famous people from Eaglemont

🖌️ Arthur Streeton

Arthur Streeton began staying at an old farmhouse on the Mount Eagle estate in December 1888. The makeshift accommodation became an artists’ camp in what is now Eaglemont, and the surrounding landscape supplied subjects for major paintings. Golden Summer, Eaglemont later travelled overseas for exhibition. His first night was less grand: the NGV records that he slept on the floor, using his boots and coat as a pillow.

🌟 Charles Conder and Tom Roberts

Charles Conder and Tom Roberts joined Arthur Streeton at the Mount Eagle farmhouse early in 1889. Their shared painting expeditions became an important part of Australian Impressionism. Comfortable accommodation was not the attraction: improvised beds, boxes for furniture and candlelight were features of camp life. The artists’ close working association helped make the landscape around Eaglemont familiar far beyond the district. Fellow painters Jane Sutherland and Jane Price also visited, widening the creative circle around the modest farmhouse.

📐 Frederick Romberg

Frederick Romberg designed the family house at Eaglemont where he and his wife Verena lived with their four children. The home belonged to his early Australian practice, following architectural study in Switzerland and migration in 1938. Later partnerships with Roy Grounds and Robin Boyd helped make him a prominent modernist architect, while teaching took him to Newcastle as its foundation architecture professor. Eaglemont’s connection joins a particular building with family life, rather than a commission alone. It places domestic experience alongside the larger industrial, institutional and apartment projects for which his architectural career became known.
